Site Utilities Installation
in Middle Tennessee
Water lines, sewer connections, storm drain, electrical conduit, and gas piping — the underground infrastructure that every building needs, installed with the precision that prevents problems for decades.
Tell Us About Your SiteUnderground Utility Installation
Every building in Middle Tennessee connects to underground utilities — water supply, sanitary sewer or septic, storm drainage, electrical power, telecommunications, and sometimes natural gas. Installing these utilities requires precision trenching, proper bedding material, correct pipe depth and grade, careful backfill, and compaction that prevents future settling. S and S Excavation and Hauling provides site utility installation services for residential and commercial projects across Manchester, Centertown, Unionville, and the broader Middle Tennessee region.
Utility installation happens early in the construction sequence, typically after site prep and before foundation work. Getting it wrong creates expensive problems — a sewer line installed at incorrect grade does not flow properly. A water line without adequate cover freezes in winter. Electrical conduit placed too shallow gets damaged during landscaping. Backfill that is not properly compacted settles, cracking pavement and pulling connections apart. We prevent these issues through methodical installation practices refined over a decade of underground work.
Our utility installation covers the full scope from main connection to building entry. We trench to specified depths, install proper bedding material, lay pipe or conduit to grade, test connections, backfill in compacted lifts, and restore the surface. We coordinate with plumbers, electricians, and utility companies to ensure connections are made correctly and inspected before burial. The underground work gets done right the first time because digging it up to fix mistakes costs three times more than doing it correctly.
Utility Installation Services
Water Line Installation
From the water main tap to the building entry, we trench, bed, and install water supply lines at proper depth below the frost line. Middle Tennessee freeze depth requires a minimum of 18-24 inches of cover depending on jurisdiction. We install service lines, meter settings, and interior stubs per your plumber’s requirements.
Sewer and Septic
Sanitary sewer connections from building to main, or septic system installations from building to tank and drain field. Gravity sewer requires precise grade — typically 1/4 inch per foot for 4-inch residential lines. We trench, bed, install, and test sewer connections before backfill. Septic system excavation includes tank hole, distribution box, and drain field trenches.
Storm Drainage
Roof drains, area drains, catch basins, and storm sewer piping that routes rainwater away from structures and across the site. We install storm drainage systems to the grades and locations specified in your drainage plan, connecting to retention systems, natural waterways, or municipal storm sewer as applicable.
Electrical and Communications Conduit
Underground conduit for electrical service, telecommunications, fiber optic, and low-voltage systems. We trench, install conduit with proper fittings and sweep bends, and backfill per the electrical contractor’s specifications. Conduit routing is coordinated with other utilities to maintain required separation distances.
Gas Line Trenching
Natural gas and propane line trenching from the meter or tank to the building. Gas line installation involves specific depth, separation, and marking requirements. We coordinate with your licensed gas fitter to ensure proper installation, testing, and inspection before backfill.
Multi-Utility Coordination
Most projects require multiple utility types installed in the same general area. We sequence trenching operations to avoid conflicts between utility types, maintain required horizontal and vertical separation distances, and coordinate with multiple trades working simultaneously. Proper coordination prevents costly relocations and rework.
Our Utility Installation Process
Utility Locate
We call Tennessee 811 and mark all existing underground utilities before any trenching begins. For sites with private utilities not covered by 811, we use caution excavation methods and hand-probe to locate lines safely.
Trench and Bed
We excavate trenches to specified depth and width, install bedding material at the bottom, and ensure the trench bottom is graded to the required slope. Clean, properly graded trenches are essential for gravity-flow systems like sewer and storm drain.
Install and Connect
Pipe and conduit are placed on the bedding material and connected per plans. We coordinate with licensed plumbers, electricians, and gas fitters for their portions of the work. Connections are tested and inspected before any backfill is placed.
Backfill and Compact
Trenches are backfilled in compacted lifts to prevent settling. Imported material is used where native soil is unsuitable for backfill. The surface is restored to match surrounding grade. Warning tape is placed above utility lines per code requirements.

Site Utilities FAQs
What utilities do you install?
We handle the earthwork and trenching for water supply lines, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, septic systems, electrical conduit, telecommunications conduit, and gas line trenching. We coordinate with licensed plumbers, electricians, and gas fitters for the connections that require specific trade licenses.
How deep do utility lines need to be?
Depth varies by utility type and jurisdiction. Water lines in Middle Tennessee typically require 18-24 inches of cover below frost line. Sewer lines depend on grade and connection depth. Electrical conduit depth depends on voltage and encasement. We install to the depths specified by your local building code and utility company requirements.
Do you install septic systems?
We provide the excavation portion of septic system installation — tank holes, distribution box excavation, and drain field trenching. We coordinate with your licensed septic installer for system design, tank placement, and distribution pipe installation. Call (931) 636-7713 to discuss your project.
Can you work around existing utilities?
Yes. We locate all existing utilities before trenching through Tennessee 811 and supplemental methods. When new utility trenches must cross or run parallel to existing lines, we maintain required separation distances and use hand excavation or vacuum excavation near existing utilities to prevent damage.
How long does utility installation take?
A residential project with water, sewer, and electrical typically takes 2-5 days depending on trench length, depth, and soil conditions. Commercial sites with multiple utility types may require 1-3 weeks. We provide a timeline during the planning phase so your other trades can schedule accordingly.
Do you coordinate with utility companies?
Yes. We coordinate with local water districts, sewer authorities, electrical providers, and gas companies for tap connections, meter settings, and inspections. Proper coordination ensures your utilities are connected correctly and pass inspection on the first attempt, avoiding costly re-excavation.
