Paving and concrete work in Middle Tennessee starts with proper ground preparation. A concrete driveway poured on poorly compacted subgrade cracks within the first year. A parking area with inadequate base material develops potholes before the paint lines fade. S and S Excavation and Hauling provides the complete paving and concrete service — from subgrade excavation through finished surface — for property owners across Manchester, Bell Buckle, Estill Springs, and the surrounding region.
Our paving and concrete capability covers residential driveways, shop and garage pads, equipment pads, parking areas, sidewalks, and small commercial concrete work. We handle the full scope — excavating to proper depth, preparing and compacting the base material, setting forms, pouring and finishing concrete, and final cleanup. The earthwork expertise that defines our excavation and grading services translates directly to concrete work, because every successful pour starts with a properly prepared base.
For asphalt projects, we provide the critical subgrade preparation and base installation that asphalt contractors need. We excavate to design depth, install and compact aggregate base material to specification, and turn over a paving-ready surface. Many asphalt failures trace back to poor subgrade work — soft spots, inadequate compaction, insufficient base thickness. We eliminate those root causes before the first load of asphalt arrives.
Paving and Concrete Services
Concrete Driveways
Residential concrete driveways from simple straight runs to curved, multi-car designs. We excavate, set the base, form the edges, pour the concrete, and finish the surface. Proper jointing, curing, and thickness ensure your driveway handles Tennessee freeze-thaw cycles and daily vehicle traffic for decades.
Equipment and Shop Pads
Concrete pads for shops, garages, carports, and outdoor equipment storage. We size the pad to your needs, reinforce for the expected loads, and pour to the thickness appropriate for vehicle or equipment traffic. Heavy equipment pads get additional reinforcement and thicker sections to prevent cracking under concentrated loads.
Parking Areas
Gravel, concrete, or asphalt-prep parking areas for residential, agricultural, and light commercial applications. We excavate to proper depth, install drainage, compact base material, and deliver a surface that handles traffic without rutting, ponding, or premature failure. Parking area design includes proper slope for drainage.
Sidewalks and Pathways
Concrete sidewalks and walking paths for residential properties and small commercial sites. We form, pour, and finish walkways with proper slope for drainage and ADA-compliant grades where applicable. Expansion joints and control joints are placed at appropriate intervals to manage cracking from seasonal ground movement.
Asphalt Subgrade Preparation
The success of any asphalt surface depends on the subgrade beneath it. We excavate unsuitable material, import and compact aggregate base to specification, and deliver a firm, well-drained surface ready for your asphalt contractor. Our grading precision ensures the base profile matches the design surface exactly.
Concrete Removal and Replacement
Existing concrete that has cracked, settled, or deteriorated needs to be removed before replacement. We saw-cut, break out, load, and haul old concrete, then prepare the subgrade and pour new material. Complete removal and replacement eliminates the source of the problem rather than patching over it.
Our Paving Process
Site Assessment
We evaluate existing ground conditions, soil type, drainage patterns, and access for concrete trucks. You get a detailed quote covering excavation, base preparation, forming, pouring, finishing, and cleanup — the complete job.
Excavation and Base Prep
We excavate to proper depth, remove unsuitable material, install and compact aggregate base, and verify the surface is flat, firm, and at the correct elevation. This is the step that determines how long your concrete lasts.
Forming and Pouring
Forms are set to the correct elevation and alignment. Reinforcement is placed per the design. Concrete is placed, consolidated, struck off, and finished to the desired texture — broom finish for traction, smooth finish for shop floors, or stamped patterns for decorative applications.
Curing and Cleanup
Proper curing is critical to concrete strength. We apply curing compound and protect the surface during the initial set period. Forms are stripped, backfill is placed against edges, and the site is cleaned up. We walk the finished work with you before the job is complete.
Paving and Concrete Projects

Why Choose S and S for Paving and Concrete
Earthwork + Concrete
Most concrete contractors pour on whatever subgrade they find. We prepare the subgrade properly because we know from our excavation experience exactly what happens when concrete sits on a bad base. Proper preparation means longer-lasting results.
Complete Service
You do not need to hire an excavation contractor for the prep and a separate concrete contractor for the pour. We handle the full scope from initial dig through finished concrete, eliminating coordination gaps and finger-pointing between trades.
Built for Tennessee Conditions
Tennessee’s freeze-thaw cycles, clay soils, and heavy rainfall create specific challenges for concrete and paving. We design base sections, concrete thickness, and drainage features to handle these local conditions rather than applying generic specifications from other climates.
Drainage Integration
Concrete and paving projects must account for water management. We slope surfaces for proper drainage, install edge drains where needed, and ensure paved areas do not redirect water toward structures. Drainage is designed into the project, not dealt with as an afterthought.
Honest Recommendations
Not every project needs concrete. If gravel serves your purpose better and at lower cost, we recommend gravel. If asphalt makes more sense than concrete for your application, we tell you. Our goal is the right solution for your situation, not the most expensive one.
Fixed-Price Quotes
Our quotes cover the complete job — no surprise charges for base material, forming, or cleanup. The price you agree to is the price you pay. If site conditions require changes, we discuss them before proceeding and adjust the scope and price transparently.
Paving and Concrete FAQs
How much does a concrete driveway cost?
Concrete driveway cost depends on length, width, thickness, terrain, and base preparation requirements. A straight, flat driveway costs less per square foot than a curved driveway through hilly terrain. We provide free on-site estimates that cover the complete job from excavation through finishing. Call (931) 636-7713 to schedule.
How thick should my concrete driveway be?
Standard residential driveways use 4-inch concrete over 4-6 inches of compacted aggregate base. Driveways that will handle heavy trucks, equipment, or RVs should be 5-6 inches with thickened edges. We assess your traffic and loading requirements and recommend the appropriate thickness for your specific use.
How long before I can drive on new concrete?
Light foot traffic is typically safe after 24-48 hours. Vehicle traffic should wait a minimum of 7 days, with 28 days being ideal for full cure. Heavy loads should wait the full 28-day curing period. We provide specific curing guidance based on the concrete mix and ambient conditions at the time of your pour.
Do you install asphalt driveways?
We provide the critical subgrade and base preparation that asphalt requires, and we can coordinate with an asphalt paving crew for the final surface. The subgrade work is the most important part of any asphalt installation — soft spots or inadequate base material cause premature failure regardless of the asphalt quality.
Can you pour concrete in winter?
Concrete can be placed in cooler weather with proper precautions — heated water, accelerating admixtures, and blanket curing to protect against freezing. We avoid pouring when temperatures drop below 25 degrees Fahrenheit or when extended freezing is forecast within the first 48 hours after placement.
What about gravel driveways?
We install gravel driveways as well. For rural properties and long driveway runs, gravel is often the most cost-effective option. We excavate the roadbed, install geotextile fabric where needed, and place graded aggregate in compacted lifts. A properly built gravel driveway provides reliable all-weather access at a fraction of concrete cost.
